Are you a complete hockey player? Power play? Penalty kill? Up a goal? Down a goal? Key Face off? Shot Blocker? Goal Scorer? Can you play in a high flying fast game and a slow grind it out physical game?
Are you a Complete Hockey Player?
Well before we can answer that question we need to know what a complete hockey player is. Being a complete player and where to develop is more extensive than most players realize. We break each player down using our flow chart.
You can see a true complete player has 4 main categories to develop.
Let’s go through these so you will better understand what a complete hockey player is.
- Skills are movements required to play the game of hockey. Skating, Passing, Shooting, Checking, etc…. You know those players with great skills sets
- Athleticism is a player’s body ability. Are they an athlete? How much power is in their legs? Speed? Balance?
- Intangibles are those more indefinable qualities that help separate the elite players from the very good ones.
- Knowledge is a players understanding of the game, and knowing what’s going on in all situations.
You’ve seen many players who have incredible skill sets, but weak intangibles…. Maybe they crack under pressure, or get angry and take stupid penalties. You’ve also seen those players who are very week skill wise but because of strong intangibles and great knowledge they continue to succeed. The smart player who does the little things right!
Which one of these players are you? And what do you need to improve to increase your complete game. Let’s look at each category in more detail.
